Poetry Soup's POEM OF THE DAY 31st May 2022

when the book of bedtime stories kissed goodnight and turned the page and was left to stand upon the shelf to fox and spot with age the bright sun lost the hat it wore and its face that always smiled with those outstretched lines of beams that shone inside of every child.

Ah, the beauty and magic of bedtime stories for children Gary and the sadness when children, and parents, think they are too grown up for these magical tales sending us into the land of Nod! Every night before I go to sleep, I read a story! So many people read before they go to sleep. Must be a leftover from childhood. Never too old for a bedtime story! Congratulations on your win. Blessings of bedtime stories for the new year!

Hi Sam. All the best for the New Year. I think bedtime stories provide the perfect foundation for a child's imagination to grow. I don't understand how, for many kids today, a tv or a cell phone at bedtime can stimulate their imagination but I guess this 61 year old would say that after all the fantastic nighttime reads I was party to as a child. :) Thanks again and Cheers - Gary

When Bedtime stories are dumped to the shelves, the child inside us dies ! Gary, quite a meaningful poem expressed in sweet brevity!

This is a rather good piece Gary, it's rather true what you said in another comment that when bedtime stories stop then childhood stops. A rather enlightening piece this is. -Gordon

Hi Christopher. I used to love the bedtime stories as a kid. I think they helped develop my imagination. I suspect kids today take their mobile phones with them to bed or watch TV. Maybe I'm being unfair and stories still get told. I think that a stage in childhood passes once the bedtime stories stop. Cheers - Gary

Gary, this is so creative with wonderful images of bedtime stories bidding "goodnight" then "turns the page." What wonderful lines - a dynamic picture. You have reached deeply into the inner child in all of us. Congratulations on your POTD! Cheers!

I will always find a way to stay in the sky, to drift in those cotton candy clouds. . . . Because reading can take you anywhere you want to go. My heart smiles knowing this truth. Congratulations Gary, on Poem of the Day. My best to you. :) Brandy

Thanks so much John. I'm smiling at your comment because at one point I was playing around with a third stanza and the idea of the child growing up and reading to his own children but I never got far with it. Thanks again. Cheers - Gary

Gary, I also am one who makes edits as I see fit, post-submission. I had no quarrel with v1.0 but I think your v2.0 strolls along at an even smoother gait. Well done.

Thanks Paulette for the lovely comments. Funny thing is, I find that the simpler my poems appear in the end, the harder they are to write! I haven't quite figured out why yet :) Cheers - Gary
