EMOJIS SEEM TO BE ENOUGH

EMOJIS' SEEM TO BE ENOUGH

Please and thank-you,
Do you often hear these words,
Shops, offices, even schools,
Lack the use,
Only nerds adopt them, what a bore,
Do we need to use dictionaries
Any more!!!!!

Shortened versions on messages
WhatsApp’s and texts
Pls. And tx, or plz and thk-u,
Oh wow then you really are with it,
But for proper English, only
Correct words shine as a jewel.

And then we have hello and goodbye,
How’s it, hi there, hey, hi dude,
None of the above are rude,
In fact, somewhat refreshing,
And somehow begetting,
Hello, is so ubiquitous,
So totally all encompassing,
So, surrounding.

Chou, see ya, catch you later,
Youngsters of today are present,
So, awe inspiring.
But it is sad to not use these
Four precious words,
Maybe in scrabble and crosswords,
One hundred points should
Be the reward,
Please and thank-you, hello
Or goodbyes, say them
Out loud,
In the company of one,
Or in a crowd.
On rethinking about the word goodbye
Perhaps it sounds too final,
So, our present generation
Find it cool,
To rather say, see you soon,
Light and hearty like a
Hot air balloon.

But for each one of these words
And for thousands more,
There are emoji’s
Which can all on their own
Tell a story and so
We are going back to Egyptian
Hieroglyphics, which
Millennium are we in
And who will in
The end win!!

Very cool, Jennifer!!! So witty as you express the challenges language and grammar face in our world where people just can't take the time to speak or write correctly, With a touch of class! I believe please, thank you and excuses me have been replaced by "give it to me " "I'm entitled," and "Just get out of my way!" Your wonderful poem emphasizes the need for decorum and thoughtfulness. Frustrating! Thank you for your wisdom! You do have a way with words. Blessings of summer joy to you!

You use wit and humor as tools to accept what we do not like but cannot change. Ever since cell phones and texting, not only has speech & socializing changed, but due to lack of grammar in text, grammar itself has changed in text books, I've read. I realized that many who grew up texting are now grown and on Soup, I think it may be why grammar isn't used by many members. I know every generation witnesses extreme changes but these / AI, et. al., seem extreme in a way that's .. shiver .. CayCay

Dear Jenny, your poem is witty, wise, and wonderfully observant! I love how you’ve captured the charm and quiet importance of those “four precious words,” while also nodding to the modern shorthand we all fall into. This is such a playful yet poignant reminder of how language evolves—but also how some words still hold timeless power. Hugs

I love your poem though I would prefer not to use these emojis. Last one I saw and used was BOL = best of luck. Maybe we are getting lazy. Hugs.

This poem is such a clever and fun reflection on language today! You blend humor with a gentle reminder of the beauty in simple courtesies. Loved the twist toward emojis and hieroglyphics—brilliant!

- Emojis are increasingly taking over our language in our computer world ... so easy to leave without words... a shame/ but true, dear Jenny :) - I don't think we think about it that much... but we should - hugs

So true Jennifer, words are not always spoken as they are meant to be said. Well said dear friend… Beryl

I think it's sad. Modern dialogue is no dialogue at all. Soup now has an entire generation that grew up texting thus grammar is missing in so many poems, acronyms; brb, lmao, etc. have also replaced speech. Very poignant and sign of the times applicable poem. I've sent you a soup mail. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Dear Jennifer, By juxtaposing the importance of phrases like "please," "thank you," "hello," and "goodbye" with the predominance of emojis and condensed language in modern encounters, your amazing poem examines the erosion of traditional polite terms in modern communication. It considers how crucial it is to preserve these terms and their meanings in a linguistic environment that is evolving quickly. This poem also discusses how language has changed in the digital age, with a special emphasis on how formal terms have given way to shorter texts and the use of emojis in communication. It both celebrates the inventiveness of modern vernacular and criticizes the informality of contemporary encounters. Enjoyed reading your wonderful poem

Our language changes with each new generation, and you have paid proper respect to the way it was. Today's youth are more international thanks to the World Wide Web. Their texting is a language that all people across the globe understand if they're under 30. This was a well-written poem, thanks for sharing it with us, Jennifer. Hugs, Bill
