Edge of Darkness and Light

Small hands hold desperately to
their protection, their sanctuary.
That thin layer of cotton,
protects them from all manner,
of monsters and evil.
Nothing hiding in the closet,
no signs of beasts under the bed
all checked by mother ,
ere they lay,
their weary head.
Praying please Lord,
get me through this night.
Lingering on the edge,
for the turning of the switch,
the bringer of the light.
Chasing all bad things,
to the edge
of that pure white light.
Imaginations,running wild
sights and sounds,
unable to cross ,
the border,
between the edge
of darkness,and the night.
Peeking out,of their fortress
blue,brown,green eyes
open from a dreamful sleep.
Their prayers have been answered,
for my soul to keep.

Very sweet poetry. I really enjoyed it and I could picture the child perhaps just pretending to be afraid in order to keep mother close. Very touching. LThankl you for your comments. Love, Joyce

I like this poem, Richard. I don't think that as a senior citizen that I am still afraid of the dark. But as a child, even into my teen years, I had the fears that your poem so accurately describes. Great insight into childhood fear. PS I still sleep with the light on!! LOL

Love the heartfelt feel of this poem. I can remember my mom chasing away our fears too. Family remains a special part of my life. What an uplifting and inspirational poem--one that I think many will relate to. Thank you for taking time to comment on my poem. Keep up the good writing! Have a nice day. Karen

Yes, I remember too well the prayer and the fear. My parents were strict and I had no night light. Still scared of the dark. : ) Wonderful to read your amazing poetry again sweet friend. Love, Shar
