Earthly Things and Earthly Men

Look not into the gilded eye today Nor sip sweet drops from the giggling waters That shatter boulders as they laugh, they play But shape themselves to weak land still later See not the sweet face there beneath your eyes Nor taste spice from the lips that kiss my own For what man can see with no sluttish lies The world that tears can never hope to drown And what foolish streams, strong as they are weak Run deep as do the shadows in those caves For gods themselves could not know what you seek And kings to you bow as if lowly slaves But earthly things and earthly men can bear No strength, no skill, to see your mind so fair.
