Dunstan River
Dunstan River of thee I write
Thy waters gurgling through the night
I did not return to thee that day
For I was suddenly pulled away
My home was not a constant place
And friendships never deep
I was a boy with only a familiar face
And fleetive memories to keep
I know then best the quiet room
The quiet trees in the woodlands gloom
The salt sea rocks where I came
To dream of Dunstan river's claim
For nothing owned that had not loved me
Nothing ever can, but that river
Was a discovery un-exhausted, a secrecy
Not well explored ... a memory owning me forever
O must got there again. I must
Wade in and feel the lips of water lust
Softly for my feet, and part its breasts
So my head between them may rest
And go to sleep, and go to sleep
On an evening when only the birds sing
And children still the peanut reap
And the river, the river a long, long string
