Driftwood
Driftwood
Upon my mantle you mutely sit
Twisted, gnarled and braided.
What perilous journey brought you here?
You grew tall, limbs outstretched
With vigor and growth in your vein.
But the winds and fierce gale
Tore you away from your noble plane,
They devoured you, tortured you,
Till you floated adrift
The raging waves beat upon you,
Like the powers of hell lashed out!
Breaking you, cutting you with each piercing gale.
The relentless nagging ocean shouts
As you hit every jagged rock.
Limb after limb, tossed to and fro,
Till you’ re washed to the sun beaten shore
Useless, entangled with debris.
I picked you from the rubble your anchor to restore,
Sun bleached, whitened, coiled and braided.
Lovingly I buffed you, polished you,
Every crevice, every twist, till you shine.
For entrenched in your bough lies a journey untold
Driftwood, as you mutely upon my mantle sit,
What stories can you tell?
