My poem was written for my wife’s birthday 4 years ago and was a tribute to one of my favorite poets and poem, Poe’s “Annabel Lee”, although I wanted a unique expression of my vision of love and family. I have used some of Poe’s poetic devices and motifs, but I have also transformed them to suit my purpose and style. I have created a contrast between Poe’s dark and melancholic tone and my bright and optimistic one. I wanted to show how love can transcend death and create life in a dream world down by the sea. Just as a trivia note you will notice my use of Big Girl, Babe, and Baby.  They were the endearing terms that I would call my daughters.

--------------------------------

How was it that so many years ago In a dream world down by the sea, That a beautiful young maiden that you may know Went by the name of lovely Louannie. And this faithful young maiden, in her depth of thought Was to love and be loved by me. I was a boy, and she was a child, In a dream world down by the sea. And she loved with a depth of love that was more than love Me and my lovely Louannie; With a depth of love like the winged cherubim on high Enveloped both her and me. I give no reason to reason from so long ago In a dream world down by the sea. A breath of God kissed our skin Filled my sassenach, my lovely Louannie. So from that, her heavenly body was seeded Giving birth to a star, just her and me, Thus burst forth a beautiful big girl daughter In our dream world down by the sea. The angels didst shout with joy in heaven, They sounded their horns for her and me. Suddenly a second breath of God caressed our hair In our dream world down by the sea. That breath carried a heavenly scent. Whisking us another child just for my babe and me. That sprung forth a second beautiful daughter In our dream world down by the sea. Now our love and our family was stronger than the love Of those who were more ancient than we; But certainly none more wiser or mightier than He In a dream world down by the sea. For heaven’s river flowed once again As a thought rushed in for my baby and me. A wellspring flowing our third daughter appeared In our dream world down by the sea. Now our love is much fuller; our quiver has grown. A fountain of youth springs for her and me. Soon we will be 3x3 and perhaps x3x3x3. Heaven has blessed where no one could imagine Neither the angels above or below nor anyone on earth, In a dream world down by the sea. For my soulmate has filled my soul with enduring love, All from my beautiful Louannie. Pisces and Taurus, Gemini and Cancer rise, creating dreams, Of my beautiful Louannie; And the stars always shine, and light sparkles in my eyes, All for my beautiful Louannie; And so, all the night tide as I lay by her side, Oh, my Sassenach—my soulmate —my life and my bride, In our dream world down by the sea. My love endures forever and a day, In our dream world down by the sea.

Great one following the rhythm, rhyme and flow of Poe's work. I wrote one a long time ago using his first line to get my rhythm for my poem. Thanks for sharing this one with us. Your visit to my page was encouraging. Sara K

Dear Sara, Thank you for your appreciative note. I wrote this one for my wife's birthday several years ago. Her name is Louann, and I call her Lounnie. She has benefited from my poetry for 43 years because I write several a year for her. She says she has kept them all. I would be very interested and see how I wrote 43, 33, 23 13, or even 3 years ago. Thanks again my friend, Blessings, Daniel

Breathtakingly beauteous, Daniel. Of love and the joyful births of your daughters with your beloved wife. With the influence of the great Edgar Allan Poe, you created a masterpiece. Bravissimo! All the best to you and your family.

Hello Mike, thank you so much for your kind thoughts. I actually wrote this poem a number of years ago and it has been one of my favorite love poems that I inked. I do have a new one up there now called Wild Mountain Honey which is also a love poem and written very differently. Have a great day. -Blessings, Daniel
