Notes About The Poem

Written 4th September,  2026 for Humorous or Bawdy Limerick Poetry Contest sponsored by Tania Kitchin

Dora

There once was a wombat named Dora
Found foraging in grassy flora.
Her scat, it came out square;
The bush rat said, "Not fair—
Can't you hide that very odd aura!”

I think it was a great limerick, and you made me laugh and educated me at the same time. Thank you. - Chris

Funny, Alison. Is it really square?

Yes it is square. It takes upto 18 days for them to process their food.Pressure and Shaping: As the gut contracts irregularly over multiple cycles, these varying wall textures squeeze the firm waste into distinct, flat-sided cubes (about 2 cm wide). I see it all the time in the bush. They also mark their territory by placing their non rolling scat on rocks.

Thanks Dorothy. I was out in the Australian bush the last few days and saw many square scat. Also the huge holes the wombat dig to make their underground homes. They are full of many passage ways and escape exits. Many other animals use the smaller passageways.❤️

Quite original, Alison. Your meter is impeccable. For me that is so important.

I love how limericks flow when the meter is right.❤️

Well, wombats have scat, and that's that, as Dr. Seuss might have said. This is delightful. I thought a mere limerick might be beneath the high standards of your soaring poetry of late --- but this extremely clever ditty certainly clears the bar with room to spare. Keep smiling, Gershon

Square bottom holes! I thought everyone knew that. A rare one in the New York Zoo that has a triangular exit. A hole in my head maybe. Great image as well. Delightful! Needed a smile. Thank you.

Dear Alison, what a delightfully absurd and witty piece of Australian bush humor! Having a refined bush rat complain about the "odd aura" of square droppings brings such a fun, cheeky personality to the scene. It is light, clever, technically spot-on, and guaranteed to bring a smile to anyone reading it. An absolute joy of a contest entry! Blessings, Daniel

I hope it gave you a chuckle. I have still to fully understand why wombat's have ⬛️ scat. Thank you for your visit.🐀
