Don'T Burn After Reading

To my daughter who never listens.

Life is not as simple as a cliché.
It's not lullabies and butterflies.
Not all sounds are soothing,
not all flowers are faithful.
It's not as relaxing as a reverie,
rarely as poetic as a poem,
so you can't hide everything behind metaphors.
You have to express your true verses,
you have to serenade in your own melody -
but never forget the chorus to our song.

Life is full of storytellers who will lead you astray,
so never believe everything you hear or see -
create your own biography, make your own history.

Our existence is fragile like petals,
yet your birth created an oasis in my heart.
I remember when they said you would not blossom,
yet you flourished in essences of evergreen elegance.
I was the first to cradle you in my arms,
as I promised to protect you endlessly.
Hoping that you would soar forever,
spread your wings higher and higher.

We never truly realise the sacrifices of our parents.
I wonder if you will ever know,
how sometimes all I had left was my smile -
never would I reveal my frailties.
It was not a simple case of masculinity,
because even the most ferocious lion cries.
I hope you never face a struggle,
as difficult as the trials forsaken upon me

and
I'm sorry if at times you saw no emotions,
apologies for the tears I never let you see,
nor the fears I never allowed you to feel,
but it was the way I was brought up to be,
it's how reality curated my personality.
If the suppression of my feelings made you distant -
remember a father will always be a shepherd for his flock.

Wars from the past have infiltrated mankind,
yet there will be many battles to come -
just don't fall asleep among heartless sleeping souls.

I shiver upon the thought of our closing goodbye,
when my shield can no longer protect you,
as every knight has to eventually lay down his sword.
The world can be a cruel and wild place,
and I remind you there is always a rainy day,
so choose wisely the paths to ponder upon -
learn how to build your own abode.

You'll always be a baby in my eyes.
I'll always be so proud.
Even in silence... I will forever love you.

Dad.

What a heartfelt poem Silent One,and you sound as wonderful a father as was my father, he died of Cancer at the age of 64, I had to be strong for my 7 year old son, we were all incredibly sad but Ricky wailed, not cried when I picked him up from school, although I had prepared him as much as you can a 7 year old. Grandfather and grandson so close. Your poem to your daughter brought back many happy memories, my dad would be proud to see how Ricky has blossomed. Blessings and hugs my friend - Jennifer.

It's sad if you are estranged. Joe does not read my poems either but somehow we stay together after all these years. I hope things work out. This poem is poignantly heartfelt

This poem is an exquisite masterpiece, overflowing with an abundance of love that can only be felt by a parent. Every line is crafted with such finesse and beauty, resonating deeply within the depths of my soul. It encapsulates the unconditional love and protection that a parent yearns to provide for their precious offspring. It portrays the delicate balance between concealing our own hardships, tears, and vulnerabilities while showcasing our unwavering strength in order to shield and safeguard our beloved children.

Wow..this brought tears to my eyes..I feel this piece so hard..the love of a parent, trying to shield their babies, so we don’t always show our struggles, tears, vulnerabilities, yet we want to show them out strengths and protect them however we can..and the whole of the 5th “I’m sorry” verse touched my heart as i felt it so deeply..your poems are truly phenomenal and so profoundly written, like a hit to the soul. I have always said you are an extraordinary poet! It’s so hard not to feel deeply as one reads your poetry, this is truly a masterpiece that pulls at the heart and soul, my friend! It is truly an honor to read and re-read! This poem as a whole is so brilliantly woven and heartfelt as all your poems are!

The purest form of poetry; truth, your words holding every thought and pattern that a parents overcomes. I really felt this line; “ I shiver upon the thought of our closing goodbye, when my shield can no longer protect you“ now who doesn't have that thought everytime they hug their children. Beautiful Pg

There is a stunning reality to every line, SO with poetry captured in it's rich essence - "even the most ferocious lion cries," "life is not as simple as a clique," "every knight has to eventually lay down his sword." These are memorable lines and remarkable images created by a master poet. Thank you for so graciously sharing your immense talent with us! Sending you blessings!

Nice tribute to your daughter, SO. Like most families, the children grow up, think they know everything, and think their parents know very little that is pertinent in their lives. Last line is the best, the love will always be there. Blessings, Bill

My very good friend, this is to me a very clear masterpiece of truth and love written to a beloved daughter. She must be so very proud of you - her great protector. I know, I raised my daughter K.K. the same way. She is now thirty-five years old and flourishing with her 6 dental practices. This true gem is a fav.. God bless you.

We all make choices, as we travel down many unknown paths. As parents, we are to guide our children, in hopes they make the right choice. Do our best, that's all that's required. Your words are from the depth of your heart, and they hold unconditional love. This is beautiful, tender and emotional, all at the same time. Hugs, Brandy
