Dolphins and Whales at Play

There are many recent records of dolphins and whales interacting in playful ways. Dolphins favoured slow and gentle behaviours such as bow-riding, meandering, touring and belly rolls. The whale species each responded differently to the dolphin behaviour. Humpback whales most often moved their pectoral fins towards the dolphins and also presented their bellies, rolled and moved upside down. Grey whales most often rolled, and southern right whales displayed pectoral slaps. All of these are friendly socialising actions similar to courtship.

[ hear the song with whale songs at the end]
Listen to poem:
The humpbacks rolled in the morning light.
Grey whales churned the seas silver-bright.
Dolphins dancing in their foamy trails.
Riding the bows of frolicking whales.
Heave Ho, the sea runs free.
Dolphins and whales in harmony.
Heave Ho, the sea runs free.
Finny friends enjoying their play.
Belly to belly, and fin to fin,
Pectoral slaps as the games begin.
Slow meandering, entwining their streams,
Happy to share their joys and dreams.
We thought their antics were fights.
Over territories, space, and food rights.
But they roll, tumble, splash, and spray.
Friends in the deep exulting in play.
From Bondi Beach to Bermagui Bay,
Its anchors aweigh; on whale-watch day,
Shooting with lenses, not with harpoon.
Hoping their forgiveness blossoms soon.
Heave Ho, the sea runs free.
Dolphins and whales in harmony.
Heave Ho, the sea runs free.
Finny friends enjoying their play.
It's such a joy to see them back.
Migrating northward on faithful track.
Guiding their young along the way.
Let's hope we're here to stay.
Let's listen to how each species sings.
Their clicks, whistles, pops, and pings.
Let's all learn their language soon.
To keep our knowledge of them in tune.
