Dog Days

The sun, now joined in battle, scorches earth; young, bellicose, brash Sirius draws nigh. The rains, diminished, scarce sustain new birth, and so commence the dog days of July. ---------- for The Sky in July Poetry Contest sponsored by Andrea Dietrich written on 07/02/2022

I think I mostly had haiku at first place but this was a standout quatrain. You gave me meter, imagery and good grammar/punctuation. the winning combination. Congrats in my contest.

Jeff, this is a poem I can relate. This poem makes me sweat but could be that I'm reading it on my front porch in Mississippi. Very true and well written.

Boy, oh boy, is it muggy here in North Alabama this morning! Just finished working outside, and very glad to be back in - thanks for your comment, and howdy, neighbor! What part of MS?

Thanks, John - yes, "I'd have written less if I'd had more time" doesn't work with syllable constraints! :-)
