Disappearing Art

Disappearing Art Not many people send Handwritten letters any more. We used to go the mailbox Full of high hopes. Maybe a favorite aunt wrote That she was coming for a visit, Or we discovered a letter From that special person, and We’d tear it open right there! After we’d read them, often We tied the letters in packets With a piece of blue string, To be reread and savored Later, over and over again. Sadly, now that we can send e-mails Nearly anywhere in the world And expect a quick reply, Written letters seem old-fashioned. And yet, we’ve learned so much About the past from letters That helped us understand The letter-writers and their times - Letters from a president, a statesman, A prairie mother, a soldier overseas. What of the correspondents of today? Will museums display their e-mails? I wonder how great will be the loss – All the stories that will never be written And all the history we will never know.

I'm afraid I am guilty of my own crime. I used to write lovely letters, but it seems so much quicker to get a letter to someone and receive an answer by email. I have one brother with beautiful penmanship who writes me every couple of weeks, and I do love to get those letters!

Writing with a pen is my passionate. Your words turned up a lot of forgotten emotions I had.

I laughed when I read your first two lines as I have seen teenagers on TV who claim they can not read, "cursive". Encourage seniors to transcribe historical records so their offspring will know their origins!

Hmmm...Barbara, everything thing has some historical significance. I could give you oodles of examples, but you will come up with them yourself. For example, think of letters soldiers wrote home during their stint in war? Just common letters, but incredibly significant. Your grandmother's recipes! So, I couldn't stop myself......

Indeed! I am sorry to say that I used to always write letters and enjoyed it. Now I resort to Email because it goes quicker and I get an answer quicker without using the telephone! My bad! Although I don't think what I have to say has historical significance.

Yes, Barbara. This is one of the sad losses as a result of technology. I don't think the children even learn cursive these days because everything is typewritten. Much to lament here.

I do lament the loss of cursive. It is so much prettier than printing. Actually it is easier once you learn it!
