Descartes

Before Rene Descartes does this world depart he gives analytic geometry its big head start from bugs that draw graphs crawling on his ceiling; as he lies sprawling, sick in bed, reeling.

I have to say that at first this poem went right over my head (for similar reasons to andrea) but now I actually know something about him, I am very amused. I also like this form, which I have not really come into contact with before.

I loved it when the discriminant within the radical sign of the quadratic formula turned out to be negative. That meant the equation had no real roots, and did not intersect the x-axis at any point. There was no need to proceed after that. Your clerihew described the father of Cartesian Geometry quite well.

He never got out of bed before noon; always sickly. In a haze he watched bugs on the ceiling and got the idea for graphs; you know, x & y axis. That joined up algebra and geometry. Not really a topic for poetry, but I like.
