Democracy

Oh, Democracy,* You, the most desirable bride among Political systems, Your suitors many have been throughout History In every part of the world, you were the one They were after But You declined their proposals, despite the fact All suitors, to charm you, they have tried, With great honors, and by putting your name Next to theirs, to allure you to sanctify their Biased politics Thus The oligarchs The Despots The Tyrants The dictators The totalitarians and Many more All Have declared themselves to be: Your fervent admirers, Your ardent devotees, Your fierce protectors, Of your eternal principles By Wrapping themselves in your Heavenly gown and calling themselves your Beloved ones But you, unyielding remained For You knew, that no one has succeeded in measuring up To the ideals, your wise father, SOLON,** has set And to the glorious values with which he Nurtured you, those superb principles: Of Virtue Of justice Of ethics Of freedom Of equality Of autonomy Of self-knowledge Of responsibility Of selfishness And Of the paramount devotion to The common good and the happiness Of the people you serve! It is for that reason, you, oh Democracy, Seldom have shown any favoritism to any of Your suitors, for all, fell short of Your lofty aspirations Thus You were, unfortunately, for very Lengthy periods of time mistreated, neglected, subjugated and Exploited by your pretenders: The immoral The unjust The dishonorable The Ignorant The power-thirsty The warmongers The money seekers, Who Chose to ignore all that you stood for and Disregarded the common good and The happiness of the people they supposed to serve For To promote their own interest and those of Their cronies Thus Ruining the chances of any truly democratic society to Be established For that reason, oh Democracy, I understand you now Why a spinster, you, have chosen to Remain! © Demetrios Trifiatis 16 OCTOBER 2014 * Democracy is the combination of two words: Demos and Cratos. Demos means the People and Cratos means Power so Democracy means “ Power to the People.” It will be helpful to read my poem “ THE BIRTH OF DEMOCRACY” for a better understanding. **The concept of Democracy is deeply rooted in the Greek Psyche! We see it in the Mythology where Zeus, the supreme God, is just “first among equals” Then appears in Homer’s poems but the father of Democracy is asserted to be Solon, the Athenian who was one of the seven wise men of old. Solon, 7th –6th centuries B.C. was the theoretician that established Democracy. Solon considered the pillars of Democracy to be Justice and Virtue. So every politician should be Just and virtuous and his main objective would be to safeguard the well-being and happiness of the people and that of the state's plus the wealth to be distributed justly among the citizens. Knowledge, responsibility, self-control, self-knowledge, sacrifice, and equality, had to be characteristics of every citizen. Plato said that “Virtue is worth as much as all gold that is possessed by all people put together and all gold that is still in the ground.” To that Aristotle added that “ every politician has to be forged on the anvil of virtue.”

Thank you for your thoughtful perspective on democracy. Sadly, it has not been always celebrated. Plato regarded democracy as the lowest form of governance, placing it just above tyranny. He believed that it would lead to tyranny. Plato's ideal society was reflected in "The Republic," where only philosopher-kings were free. Winston Churchill said, "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others." Democracy is never tidy. Equal justice for all is necessary to make it work.

So true. NEEDS TO BE SHOUTED FROM THE HIGHEST ROOF TOP. Also needs to be restated rewritten and reminder of consequences of not remaining true to it's principles given. My personal Quote: "Ethical behaviour is present in all true democracies" Lack of thinking time is great danger to modern democracy. Can see why no comment is used by some politicians. An off the cuff response is too soon regretted. Thanks you my friend. Your faith will ensure you never give up. David still in NZ

Oh Demitri how I love your work and now I am a follower of your unique conscience but.... I do not agree and your lofty aspirations fall so terribly short in my country. Over here they bastardized everything with their perpetual evil and insurmountable greed .To read such beauty in your work makes one cry the beloved country

Wow, Demetrius. An amazing write. I did search and read your poem, "The Birth of Democracy." Thanks for sharing this. And don't we all wish that our politicians were forged on the anvil of virtue. Unfortunately, the pervading quality seems to be greed, no matter what comes out of their mouths.

My friend, Cona, I have run for the Greek and for the European parliament but never were elected for I always spoke on matters concerning virtue, justice, honesty and equality! Thank you for visiting and commenting.

It is truly fitting that a Greek has written this splendid piece. One of your best and now a favorite of mine. 7!

Demetrios, Thanks for your wonderful detailed note back to me. I copied out your comments so I can show them to my wife. She was quite interested in your write on Democracy as I was as well!! In America, my all-time favorite President and a Man for All Intellectual Seasons was Thomas Jefferson. I had originally studied History, Political Science and Literature during my university days in the USA. BTW, I liked the answer you gave to the Minister of Culture. Perfect!! Kant and Nietzsche!! Demetrios, A very clever and very well-articulated write here on "Democracy." You've added substantive depth and dimension here that a lot of people are probably not even aware of. Your notes on the Concept of Democracy are quite interesting. I shared the Dramatic Monologue write here with my wife Ingrid. My wife studied Philosophy and Chemistry at a German university. She knows Greek philosophy and history quite well. She's very impressed with your work here, as I am too!! A "7" and a FAV. Gary

So, deine frau ist eine philosoph? Wunderbar! My friend Gary, once in a symposium on politics I gave a speech before well known politicians and manage to make them upset. In a tv debate in the national elections of 2007 when I was a candidate for the Greek Parliament, the minister of culture asked me: "Do you mean, Mr. professor, that we do not have Democracy here, today?" I replied: " Of course not Mr. Minister for where is justice and virtue and equality and sharing of the wealth and the interest for the common good?" The minister didn't utter a single word in response! People talk about Democracy but know nothing about it! Thank you for your visit, comment and grading! I appreciate it! Tell your wife that E. Kant and F. Nietzsche are on the top of my list of German philosophers Besonders Kant!

Harry, My friend, thank you so much for your visit and your gracious comment! It is a pity that people everywhere use the word " Democracy" but they do not know its original meaning and philosophy! My purpose was to share this knowledge of Democracy with our friends. Many times have I lectured on the subject and once, in order to make the point that Democracy is misrepresented, I gave a speech in a congress on politics on the subject where known politicians were present and made some of them feel very uncomfortable!

Your wisdom shines so brightly here, my dear poet. Yes....the metaphor of bride is so apt. Also...ending by calling her a spinster. Wow...even countries that CLAIM to be democratic pale by comparison with the characteristics of true democracy you have stated here. Lovely! I'm awed.

If you understand what I write then you are as wise my dear! Thank you so much for liking the way I presented Democracy. Unfortunately, people do not know what Democracy is all about , each one sees it differently, according to his own interests. Of course, I do not expect the poem to be appreciated by many and make it to the list of the poems of the month, but the poem indented to present Democracy's intrinsic value: Democracy as it was meant to be by her father: SOLON! Thank you so much for your kind words and generous evaluation!
