Dementia

You just could not understand why,
there was no one there that could hear you cry,
you didn’t know I could feel each tear that burned you.

You thought needing help was a sin,
so you refused to let anyone in,
while I screamed at God to show me what to do.

You used to be so full of song,
then you found your music had long since gone,
the silence crept upon you without warning.

It left you very far from home,
on a path you thought you must walk alone,
with no one there to help you find the morning.

For too many years late in life,
after your darkness had eaten the light,
and the nightmares pushed away reality.

Locked away in your broken shell,
where you battled with demons from your hell,
and struggled to find a way to be set free.

I watched the spark fade from your eyes,
til your mask of life fell, without surprise,
still it left me with a heart cold and broken.

I lost you in this life that’s true,
I don’t know how to say goodbye to you,
I’m sorry for the words I left unspoken.

Congratulations on your sympathetic lines being chosen as poem of the day, Jerry. It's heartbreaking for the family to see a loved one fade from recognizing anyone. What a hollow world dementia must be.

Christina's descriptions (tender, profound, touching, poignant) capture my thoughts better than I can. I'll add only the obvious: sorrowful and disquieting. More than deserving of POTD.

A marvellous write Jerry, it’s so hard to watch someone close to you live with dementia, I had my mother and mother-in- law go through it and I now how it hurts and how difficult it is to deal with. Congratulations on receiving Poem of the Day. Beryl

Dear Jerry, you're right; this disease will take the light and life away from our loved ones. It's difficult watching the ' spark fade, ' while searching for the right words to say. Your thoughts caress gently around me and my heart. Congratulations on Poem of the Day. Many wonderful blessings to you. Hugs, Brandy

Dear Jerry The raw emotion and word pictures you've written into each line convey a profound sense of loss and struggle. It's evident that you've poured your heart and soul into expressing the pain and turmoil of witnessing a loved one's battle with dementia. The way you depict the confusion, isolation, and ultimately, the heartbreaking loss of identity is both haunting and incredibly moving. The metaphorical journey through darkness and the relentless search for light resonates with anyone who has experienced the devastating effects of this disease. This is a very insightful poem. – Blessings, Daniel
