Death of a Soft Side
Rosy tongues and glowing hearts
Gravity weakened and weakness grounded
A heart of steel and a smirk of tart
What remained after the snares sounded
These lips once held an angel’s name
These eyes embraced pure beauty
From my ears the voice of grace sang
And loving her was my cherished duty
I fought as I promised, with life and mind
I pursued when I could no more
But my spirit was taxed and my health fined
And I was taken by that dreadful war
With a crude grasp she ripped it out
Scratching and tearing with darkened eyes
My chest now hosts but hollowed doubt
The blood that warmed my soul now dries
My soul hunches beneath the skin of my shoulders
Visible through the windows in my wall
Though my being drags, I march on a soldier
And it’s this until return or call.
