Dear Heart
You have always been so very weak
Fragile, soft and oh so meek.
Crying over every broken dream
Vulnerable to me you did seem.
So I built a wall so very strong
To protect you from every wrong.
I built a wall so very high
A wall to keep you from the why.
I added bricks year for year
Would not let life come near,
For you were too soft you see
To handle what life presented me.
Yet in you a vaguely subtle yearning
An inexplicable, unreasonable burning,
To open the sturdy door so wide
And invite the pain to come inside.
For I know that you do not see
The lurking, grinning enemy,
Waiting to tear you apart
Leaving me with a broken heart.
I know you cannot handle the pain
That life hands out again and again.
High and tall I built these walls
And simply ignore your frustrated calls.
