Day Seven

On the seventh day, The Lord ceased working, rested, and 'set aside or sanctified' the seventh day, making it Holy. Even on his 'day off', He implemented 'the sanctification' of the seventh day. He also evaluated his work and determined that all things were just the way He wanted them. Human beings were perfect when he made them; no adjustments or tweeting required. Unlike anything else, Adam and Eve were given a 'free will' to choose their future steps. So, He ceased his work of creation but performed other important tasks. Yes, God anticipated a different kind of work He would be doing in the future. After working 6 days to create the universe, human beings, the animal kingdom, and all the rest, God rested on the seventh day. The Lord commanded the Israelites to observe the Sabbath or the seventh day by doing no work, and even travel was very limited. By the time of Christ the Jewish leaders had abused God's laws and misused His people. They made the Law of the Sabbath to fit their wishes. When one considers what God did on the Sabbath and the principles He sought to implement, we can see the value of 'Rest'. The first Adam disobeyed and made 'work' to be seen as part of 'the curse'. I have often thought that we take less pride in our work as a craft, but are more concerned about its pay and benefits. Unlike God, we are more interested in 'what comes next' than 'what we have done'. Most Christians do not observe 'The Sabbath'. Sunday is observed by Christians as a special day of worship because the first day of the week was The day of Christ's Resurrection. When we accept His salvation and Lordship, we enter into His rest and thus cease from working and thriving for eternal life. The New Adam, Christ, offers all of mankind a pathway back to the true meaning of work, its beauty and blessing. In our time and culture, the human mind, body, and soul are crying out for a rest like that of God's rest which He is willing to restore. Man, the land, the air, the waters, the animal kingdom, and all of God's creation stands in dire need of 'real rest'. God stands ready to 'renew us' if we dare to allow him.
