Date Night
I want a date
Where we start
Awkward
And become age old
Friends by the end of it,
Not a
Half-hearted
Love story
Written
In its entirety
Before we’ve even
Begun.
I want some
Smiles
At god-awful jokes,
Coffee (caffeinated)
At 3 in the morning
When we watch the sun
Come up,
Dawn breaking on a night
Well spent
Without sleeping.
I want a partner
In crime,
A friend when
All else fails,
A companion
To travel down the
Same side of the street
As me,
Maybe even a hand
To hold while we walk.
I want to be
All these things too,
A generator of good times
And a shoulder to lean on
During bad ones.
I want to make a house
A home.
The only home I’ve ever known
Is my best friend’s couch,
Using a sweatshirt as a sheet
To sleep under.
I want something better-
Not merely for me,
But for the both of us-
A space where they
Will feel safe,
Loved
Even when we disagree
Because we will
Be fighting
On the same team.
I want to write each day,
Not on a piece of paper
But into my memory
Where I can tell the story
Of a Juliet and a Romeo
Where they grow old
And live happily ever after.
I want someone
Who will make me own up
To my mistakes,
Who creates a better person
Than the one I am today,
Than the one I’ll be
Tomorrow,
And the day after that too.
And I want you to know,
I’m not looking for perfect.
I just want to have someone
Who is willing to work
On working together-
I’m heading into the
Restaurant
Now,
So wish me luck.
I’ll talk to you
When date night
Works out just right.
