Notes About The Poem

Based upon a painting I saw in Barcelona

Dark is the Night and So Many Trees

Dark is the night
with shadows and bleached bones
of leafless trees
Limbs frozen in time
A sculpted beauty
shroud below her thighs
Dark is the night
and so many trees
buried near the corpse flowers
Has he ever watched them bloom
or were his eyes transfixed on the shovel
Dark is the night
yet the moon shows its phases
always a sentinel of fate
never able to help the inculpable
as the black clouds devour
Dark is the night

I love this. The use of anaphora, "dark is the night" is very appealing and creates a musical effect that makes my soul dance. Congratulations dear Kim. A HUGE fave!!^___^ JCB

This poem feels really dark and haunting, but also strangely beautiful. The imagery of ‘bleached bones of leafless trees’ and ‘corpse flowers’ creates a strong sense of death and decay, while the repeated line ‘Dark is the night’ makes it feel almost like a warning or a chant. I also like how the moon is presented as something that watches everything happen but can’t stop it, which adds to the helpless feeling in the poem
