Dangers of the Dark

As darkness fell, I realised I was lost. The densely wooded area became a monstrous maze, in which I blindly groped, stumbling and tripping over tree roots; each rustle, each sound became something sinister (whereas in daylight they had been benign). I heard a distinct drumming: my heart was thudding; my head full of fiends: demons, devil-worshippers, witches, werewolves, spirits and serial killers. Which one would get me first? I was sure I wouldn't survive until morning... written 12th September 2017 for Russell's Dark contest
