Daddy, On Your Wedding
Dear dad,
I understand that today is your big day, your wedding day. Your life is taking a different turn- hopefully. In my entire life, I’ve never really held a conversation with you. A real conversation. You see dad, I know that I’ve always been your favourite. At least I believed that. You’ve always remembered me, you’ve always had me in your heart; and for that I appreciate. But dad, you know how much mum cried for you if not because of you. Well, I don’t remember you raising your hand to hit her but your words and actions caused her pain. You know how absent you’ve been in our lives- Roselyne’s children. My intention is not to make you feel bad about the past that you cannot change, no. On the contrary, I want you rejoice because my need for you led me into God’s arms. I know you have your version of the story and I would like to hear it one of these fine days. I would like to hear your hopes, your fears, your dreams, whatever you’d be willing to share. Let’s have coffee one of these days probably before I leave for work. I promise to listen, I promise to pray for you or with you. I promise to tell you what happened when you were away. How Christ found me, how he washed me clean and clothed me, how he introduced me to me and gave me a new name, and became everything I ever needed. And for the time that I’ve walked with him, he has taught me the way of love. That I should honor you and accord you the respect that you deserve. And I’ve made peace with the fact that we might not be best of friends after this day, and it is okay, but I just want you to know that I love you and I wish you every best in your new journey. I don’t know that much about Lucy but I hope she holds your hand. And you hold hers. And that together with Christ, your union is built on all that is great. Dad, this is your chance for redemption. This is God’s voice taking to you, giving you a second chance; I hope you’ll listen. Make things right. You owe it to us and to mama and above all to God. Be Lucy’s strength, be her support, be her peace, listen to her, be there when she’s at her lowest, communicate when you’ll stay out late, treat her as special as she is to you.
Lucy, I can assure you my dad is one hell of a man and I congratulate you for choosing to stay. It won’t always be easy with him but I hope you make it through. Together. Communicate with each other, respect each other and above all seek God. I promise to always pray for you. Congratulations daddy.
