Culture Club
Before extravagant, painted musicians
with fantastical hats and synthesizers
crooning 80's melodies and harmonies,
there was us.
A small band of two conjoined families
with an insatiable hunger for culture
We picked a nation out of a hat
Germany, Russia, Hawaii, Spain
and prepared their food
wore their clothes
sang their songs
told their stories
We planned and planned and planned
to events worthy of being called "eventful"
Then we picked composers:
Beethoven, Bartok, Chopin, Grieg
and played their music
told their lives
wrote their poems
cried their tears
We lost ourselves in history and the present tense
Memories to bless the skin and swallow the mind - whole.
There isn't a child born, who wouldn't expand their existence
with such an upbringing.
So we said:
"Kill the TV!"
"Run 'till panting"
"Never judge"
"Yearn to learn"
We dreamed away the evenings
spent in other lands, as other people
with the true realization that culture
can be found in your own living room...
if you look hard enough.
