Cries of War

Boom boom boom boom boom boom My heart pulsing in my ears Along with the sound of footsteps causing The ground to vibrate beneath my head I squint through the darkness Breathing slowly and heavily Inhaling the sweet raven red blood And spraying it across the ground with every exhale Sweat matting the hair to my forehead Covered with dried itchy blood The rest of my body immobilized Cold and still on the frozen ground of the open field Cries of war ring out across the land Gunshots fired in every direction An no one to help me in the darkness I lie here staring at the frosted grass Praying to the lord that I'll be able to see my family again That someone will find me Save me... The shouting fades The sun's rays break the horizon of a new day Until everything fades out...

frightening images of the thing we as a country need to be reminded of. that war isn't just death but it is the fear that shocks and immobilizes us. haunts our dreams and affects our nervous system to the point of being a handicape. war is hell. John H Loving

You capture well the anxiety and fear of a frightened soldier awaiting death when "everything fades out." Very powerful poem, Jen!
