Contest Entry Or Me

Will you only read my work
If for a contest entry?
Or will you because you love
The poetess that is ME?

Do you only check my rhymes,
When I decide to compete?
Or do you just read my lines
Cause you want a tasty treat?

I read, for I love your words
I simply love who you are!
I read, you see, for to me
You’re a luminescent star!

Of course contests can be fun
It gives us a little edge
But some poets can be shy
They peek from behind the hedge

So try out the “normal” ones
That ones that witness of life
Of those precious daily things
Yet with love and passion rife

I quarry these little rhymes
From my heart at times like stone
I squeeze them out soaked with blood
When it has a flesh like tone

Some of them may seem ho hum
Others pretty much mundane
Contest or not, they are me
Passionate and quite insane!

I feel like some people are not doing it, and that is disheartening to me. Glad to have someone like you here at soup. Ilene Bauer June 15, 2013 at 1:39 PM i think all the contests have to be taken with a grain of salt (or a margarita!). i hope people don't read only poems that are written for contests, because that would be a shame. i try not to let it bother me when i don't place well (or at all) in a contest - different strokes for different folks. i enjoy all of your poetry, contest or not! I'm selective myself, so....how care I complain. I read my favorite poets, and if a newcomer reads something of mine and posts a comment, I visit and leave one too. No time in the world to read everything so..Yes...I'm developing a think skin where contests are concerned...With my track record...I've GOTTA! ;)

Two first places...two second places...one fifth place...one 8th place...and one honorable mention! That is the sum total of my Contest history!!!! Oh well, Richard....you like me, right? Well, that IS true...Only started joining recently. However, there are one or two...Ok maybe 3 or 4 that I DID join and didn't even PLACE! ;) Interestingly enough, my two wins were from MALE poets...Hmmmm...I'm building a theory here! Will see if it is true. So...I have joined a few of late...and being rarely mentioned does have a bit of a sting,...I will bear with you, Mr Seal, even though you're have BRIT!

Sometimes I wonder...it seems that only my friends find me work interesting, and I think that is because they have come to know me...as a person, and not because of the "beauty" of what I write. I don't know....my mind wanders.
