Common, Everyday People

I meet people everyday. I talk to people everyday
People from all walks of life, familiar and strange
On the street, at work, at the grocery store, everywhere I go
My fellow Black people. White people. Hispanic people.
Asian people. People that check "Other" on application forms
Common, everyday people who inspire me to be a better individual
Especially heroic people who truly make a difference in our society
Smarter people who inspire me to learn more, to read more
Good samaritans, radiating positivity; going the extra mile
To do good deeds for others. They restore my faith in humanity
I've seen strangers perform random acts of kindness
Inspiring me to follow their example. I learn something new
From talking to strangers, friends, and family. I even learn
About myself doing so. I look for the best in people. Most people
I meet are wonderful, but I've met my share of rotten apples
This much is true about common, everyday people
You'll never get any respect unless you give it first. You show them
Love and kindness, they're likely to return the favor. If you
Accept them for exactly who they are, they'll do the same for you
If you judge them, they will, in turn, judge you
