Notes About The Poem

Comin' Hame - Coming Home -Scottish Dialect

A angry sky, as cauld as Loch Lomon'
fair drew me out from cot o' peat, an' bed.
The wolves wus wailin', an' thund'r respond'd
Ah gather'd tam, me tartan, an' dug Red.
To 'orse ah took an' found the 'erd sam 'urt.
The 'ungry wolves 'ad already fed.
Inta the bi'er blaw, the rill ah skirt
thro braes a white, t'ward ham an' fire burnin'
the bleatin' sheep, the 'orse an' ah alert.
We wud mak it hame, stomaches churnin'
O smell the peat fire on the wild wind now,
'ear the cows faint distant ca', a lowin'
'erself wud know, we'r near ta the brow.
Noo, we 'ad beat the storm hame, an' kep' me vow.

Dedicated to Jimbo Goff & James Fraser
and the spirit of Robin Burns

Not very familiar with Scottish dialect, so there were a few words that I did not understand. Other than that, this is a classic story. Very visual; makes me feel sorry for the poor fella. I just went out to feed the cows while it is snowing :) I'll say it does have a genuine feel about it.

Oh man....."Lang May Yer Lum Reek!" LOL Doesn't translate the same as it looks, Debs :) ..."A Scottish salutation wishing long life and prosperity. Literally, long may your chimney smoke." They use it as a New Year's greeting. Hope all's well with you and yours! Love, Mikki

You know Deb....my great/great/great grandfather on my mom's side was an English Officer in the King's Regiment called "The Black Watch" that's how he met my Scottish great/great/great grandmama...he didn't join her to America in around 1862...she came with her son, alone, ended up in Chicago, where my oldest daughter lives and works!

1st. You smartly tweaked my "2-liner" in yer blog...pulling personal "your" makes cleaner traditional (good) haiku....2nd. Every line above read like a needed transfusion for my very soul. Goin to mine faves...goin on my wall...goin everywhere! Found myself savoring every word like i never have here, sweet Lady! WOW...just jimbo
