Notes About The Poem

8/4/2026 for Shakespearean Sonnet Poetry Contest sponsored by Craig Cornish

City Leaf - Country Leaf

A forest leaf, sways far from any man,
amid soft rustling, pleasant to the ear,
like footfalls as the woodland creatures ran,
and birdsong for a passing greenwood deer.

Indeed, the leaf life on a country tree,
with clean, clear waters and unsullied air,
and green and blue as far as he can see,
surpasses Cuz who spies me in my chair.

Yet, Cuz is smiling from his vantage point,
through the window as I write this odd stuff,
(no one would ever me, "Leaf Pro", anoint)
as he awaits my girlfriend, in the buff.

The woods have reigned through countless ages past,
but catch mankind today, for it won't last.

Kinda weird but what the hay! I sure don't know how to do this theme . Yours is creative I will say. 🤔

Yeah, it's hard to say what I'm trying to do with this one, and the stanzas don't connect very fluidly. I think I was too preoccupied with trying to make sure I got the iambic pentameter, right.

Ha, ha. Certainly more memorable than 'City Mouse, Country Mouse.' ~ Louie Louse

Hello David, this one made me smile and I wasn't smoking any leaves. The mix of classic sonnet form with that cheeky, modern twist gives the poem a fun, unexpected charm. I thought how your closing couplet lands with a thoughtful truth about the woods outlasting us. A clever, enjoyable write. Blessings, Daniel

Haha, thanks Daniel! I'm glad you commented, because it made me reread it, and I made two very small changes in the 3rd stanza, one to replace a proper noun with a pronoun to make it less redundant, and another to change a single word to make a line grammatical.
