Christmas Lights
by Robert (Bob) Moore

Be nice to have the Christmas lights up out the front she said
some of the neighbours have theirs up, our place looks kinda dead
so out into the shed I go, to find the boxes and some gear
but they’re tangled and they’re twisted, from when I took them down last year

I start to unravel them, to see which ones will show
the coloured lights still twinkling, but some I’ll have to throw
into the bin, red, yellow, black, recycling’s got me stumped
eeny, meeny, miney, mo, it’s still going to get dumped

Took everything out to the front, checked what I had to do
her words were ringing in my ears, no nails, no tape, no glue
spoil any of the paint out there, a patch won’t be enough
another job to paint it all, ‘cause patching looks too rough

So how am I going to hang them up, if I can’t use the glue
no nails, no tape, no chewing gum, I don’t know what to do
I’ll have to run a stringline, under the awning, and make it tight
then tie the lights up to that line, hope they make it through the night

Extension cords and power boards, and timing switches too
I think that I have everything to do what I must do
string, a knife, some pliers, can’t do too much harm there
and don’t forget the stepladder, but she says, you just take care

She will ask me please take them down, probably on boxing day
she says that’s when it should be done, cause people go away
I say leave them for another week, till New Year’s day has fled
then take them down, and tangle them, and back into the shed
                            <><><><><><><><><><>
