Christ Arose

Of all the plethora of Easter thrills The empty tomb always gives me chills To think that Jesus rose from the dead Unfathomable, but takes away our dread, Reminding us that life goes on after death That living in Christ sets us eternally free After leaving this world, I’ll still be me, Because I have everlasting life in Him “Christ Arose” – I love to sing that hymn! For some, Easter is a time for new frills Seldom thinking of who has paid the bills For our sin, He the Via Dolorosa tread On the cross, He the supreme penalty bled Reminding us that life goes on after death “Oh, Lamb of God,” how can it be? -- That morning, at the tomb, Satan did flee At Calvary, when we thought it all so grim There, at the tomb, found our hope in Him.
[Note: Gina, I know it probably doesn't qualify, but this is how it came to me. I tried Free Verse, but it didn't work. So, I just want you to enjoy it this way.] written March 23, 2022 for "Easter Poetry Contest" sponsored by Regina McIntosh

I especially like this part "Because I have everlasting life in Him “Christ Arose” – I love to sing that hymn!"

Yep...I've sung that hymn about every Easter Sunday morning of my life.

Oh I was wondering about the rhyme and then saw your note on the bottom. Yes, sometimes I will be trying to write free and a few rhymes just appear out of nowhere (naturally without trying to rhyme) and I think to myself, is that gonna count against me? This is beautiful. Are you Catholic by the way? Via Dolorsa makes me think of Catholic. I got to see the place where he may have carried the cross and later been put in the tomb. Back in '74. This lovely poem puts me in mind of that time.

No, I'm an American Baptist by raising, but I like to think of myself as a Deist/Christian. I just wanted Regina to read it, because I thought she would like it. The Free Verse attempts simply didn't work for me. I wouldn't expect it to place in the contest, since she specified Free Verse. Anyway, I classified it as Free Verse so it would show up in the contest. Otherwise, I couldn't be sure she would read it.

Love this, Milton! Love the use of Via Dolorosa and the hymn! …when we thought it all so grim…that was the hardest time in existence…except for hope of the resurrection! God bless you ~ Kim

Thanks, Kim. It is rhyme rather than Free Verse, so I don't think it stands a chance in the contest, but I hope Gina will like it.
