Notes About The Poem

Choices

Choices

I dreamed of floating in a toxic sea
with lifeless fish and plants surrounding me.

Above the heavens cast down acid rain
to burn my skin as I winced from the pain.

Volcano Island rumbled to my east
until red plumes of lava were released.

‘Twas then I woke and found myself in bed
with overwhelming feelings of deep dread.

Outside my window, robins on the wing
were building nests on this first day of spring.

The willow’s long arms fell to earth like rain
and I was pleased to be awake again.

Then suddenly, a ring from my alarm
as colors fade to gray, day’s lost its charm.

I’m so confused that now I can’t recall
just which world was my “dream state” after all.

I see two worlds, one heaven and one hell;
our choices will determine where we dwell.

Solid narrative full of stark realities expressed in lovely poetic lines, I love such poems. Indeed the task of the judges of such poetry contests must be very difficult: how to choose among such gems! Congrats dear poet, Carolyn Devonshire

Beautiful imagery on a perennial dilemma, with a philosophical touch, well done for a deserving first place.

I believe that dreams can be meant to be a wakeup call, Carolyn. They dwell on experiences, thoughts, worries and choices. Your lovely poem makes us think as we look for the ideal ways forward in life....and what follows after. Hope you are keeping well my friend. Hugs // paul

Wowww I totally admire this awesome poem to shake our careless rapacious senses before we continue making the planet a hell with our selfish choices. A great environmentalist poem indeed!!! Kudos!!! Plz do read and comment my newest poem too.

Well, we all know what the Bible says about the end times that if one has read the book so we know what will be happening like 1/3 of all the fish in the sea will die, 1/3 of all the forest will die, etc. We just don't know when it will happen. Thanks for visiting my page and your sympathy for our loss. Sara

Hello Carolyn ... certainly many of the highs and lows in our lives are from our own choices. A very thoughtful poem Carolyn - Lindsay

The intolerant God of the Middle East set a precedent, drowning, burning, etc. anyone and everyone who might disagree an attitude which persists to this day with Hamas believing they can rocket Is-Ra-Ill-ites who will turn the other cheek. Your penultimate verse is one consequence as people struggle for the truth! Aloha! Rico

Man has managed to destroy this world beginning with the industrial revolution. Now we've made our world a dustbin, chemicals, plastic, dirt. You had a nightmare but if we continue the way we are, it will be disaster. Hugs.

Each couplet a scene that tells a story! Expertly done, Carolyn. Our choices will indeed determine where we dwell. All the best.
