Charlie Ii

Charlie, My Darlin',
Was that you,
from the other side...
of the Thames?

Oh yes!
South London was the place
where you came from...
an alien place.

Full of biscuits and jam,
smells of vinegar and beer.
Glue factories and smoke,
You'd think Charlie was a bloke!

All the makings
of a slum...
that's where
Charlie came from.

And drinks
played an obvious part,
where prostitution...
was an art.

And to escape...
for a while,
it was Hannah
that moved to west square.

Where Charlie remembered
that odour of fresh cut roses,
lilacs, and flower girls...
of pure delight!

True memories
of the past,
became the stirings...
of your own imagination!

But Charlie was abandoned,
becoming rootless...
with no home,
at all.

Where only you
could pretend,
to become...
someone else.

And you became...
the little tramp,
everyone knew,
so well.

Detached and invincible,
always picking yourself up,
walking, jauntly,
into the distance..
