Chains

CHAINS 1940s “Joe’s” “Good food” The sign says Hole in the wall All you can call it Joe and Ethyl – owners Honest as the day is long Just plain folks and nothing fancy Never make the show on Iron Chef Just looking back this modern day and age NOW Chains Yes chains! Big city Bit city chains And modern people Honest folk all in chains The chains have run all Joes out We all clank like Jacob Marley While the rich eat at the country club And not at chains – Joes are gone forever

Well written Etherees and the nostalgia is felt through the line, with interesting description of today's reality compared to the past's. Thanks for sharing and thank you for your kind comments on my latest. Caroline.

Wow, Daver, you're so right with that! I myself won't go to chains if I got to chose. But here in Saxony (Zittau is the place), Germany, we don't have many chains but small stalls and bistros...Nice Etheree...Gert

nice double etheree, Daver. Like the way you brought it around and love the Jacob Marley line.. Good one. We still got a couple of Joes around here but it's hard for em to stay in competition. This Etheree of yours could well be said for bakeries also... thanks

Says so much about life these days. Leaves me longing for the simpler life again. Everything runs so fast, so big, that that individual people get lost in the shuffle. Good way to make your point. Keep on writing!!! Thank you for your kind comment. Karen

Sad...Those places disappearing slowly but surely..Places like that were good places to eat..We still have the pool room down town..It is not a pool room but a restaurant serves only lunch..A good sloppy joe hamburger and a dressed dog..I am glad that you wrote this one and I am glad that I chose it as one of the ones that I would read this afternoon..I was delighted with the comments that you posted on my work "Joy Of The Different Seasons"

Great write on the way we have become a society of chain stores and left the little man behind.

The chains have taken over and forced a lot of mom and pop restaurants out of business throughout the country, Daver. Whatever became of the small entrepreneur and his efforts to please customers. Chains don't offer much in terms of customer service. Mass produced messes. Nostalgia reigns in this poem, my friend. Well done! Love, Carolyn
