Can It Be

HELLO! … Hello … hello (hello … hello …)
OUT THERE! … Out There … out there … (out there … )

Silence---deep, dark, impenetrable---washes over me

My gaze takes in the vast sweep of starlight on a clear night
Knowing all of that it is but a mere speck in the grand scheme of things...
I am frightened

Am I -- are we -- is the human race ALONE
Amidst all of this bewitching splendor
This cold-hearted, stony magnificence

Can it be
