Notes About The Poem

CALL OF NATURE

I used to rise with purpose,
with promise,
with poetic notions of dawn.
Birdsong, sunrise, fresh starts ~
all that inspirational stuff.

But these days,
the sun can mind its own business.
It’s not in charge anymore.
No celestial body tells me when to wake.

Because now I rise
with the truest call of nature,
the one force stronger
than ambition, enlightenment,
or even a good dream.

I rise with my bladder~
that tiny tyrant,
that dawn-defying dictator,
that unignorable alarm clock
with no snooze button.

Very original and to a common intrusion. Morning would be better without bladders.
