BRUTAL BRITAIN

At our junior school in Yorkshire.
I had turned up late for class three times
So our strict class teacher, called Miss Howarth
Sent me to the head mistress to be strapped.
Miss Kershaw then gave me six of the best.
I started crying from the stinging pain.
Miss told me that if I don’t stop crying
She then would give me another thrashing.
She told me that men should not show feelings.
Be British and stand up with some backbone.
This was back in nineteen fifty seven
But I still remember the stinging pain.

Back then teachers were brutal, they wouldn't get away with it now. Tom

i got hit on my first day at infant school - the teacher's son aged about 10 was off school 'ill' his mum left him in charge of us - he started to run round the classroom -so we all followed - 2 of us got 'the plimsoll ' as we were nearest the door when the teacher came back in - her son got no punishment. the effect on me was massive even now i can still picture them both:-( hugs Jan xx

Thanks Jan. It started me thinking some more about those brutal days and various forms of corporal punishment. I remember the plimsoll and the strap. But for shear brutality see my next poem on soup. Tony X
