A few weeks ago I noticed that the nest built right above the lights for our cars' garage had been occupied by some new little baby birds. I can just barely see their little eyes peering down from the nest. My husband does not want to ruin their home, so he has postponed changing the light bulbs in those lamps above which the nest was built.

Recently I've been seeing great activity. And I hear sweet chirping when I get out of my car. I don't know what is going on for sure. There are two small birds (by googling it, I think they are barn swallows) that keep flying around. They swoop very close to me sometimes. I thought perhaps they were the new ones learning to fly. But now I think they are the parents because I see the top of the head of one of the birdlings still just sitting up there calmly in the nest. In the poem, I imagine this little one waking to his parents' song each morning and wondering about the world he is about to see. I sure love seeing these birds each day! Sure wish they were as excited to see me!!

A swallow with black iridescent wings am I! My wings in sunlight shimmer blue. I snuggle in my nest while mother sings and wakes the world.; it’s all so bright and new. I peek out from my nest. Below I see a host of roses - yellow, red and pink. They beam with beauty as they call to me, “Come out and see the sun about to sink behind bronzed mountains’ snow-white peaks. Its hue will be rose-violet! Soar from your nest above green lawns to white-foam clouds and view from azure skies. . . Earth’s colors at their best!” Farewell to merely peeking at this world. I’m flying with my shiny wings unfurled!

This is such an endearing, charming sonnet from a baby bird's POV with the world bright and new and colorful. Sweet interaction between mother and baby, too. Love this, as I do all your sonnets, you have a special gift.

You have painted a picture that makes me smile! And loved reading your "About this poem" true account of the birds above your garage. WE have several nests every spring....they make me so happy to watch them grow until they fly away!

Not hard to see the world from a brighter view with the freedom this winged beauty enjoys. You really capture the essence of that, and the sensation of taking in the grandeur of nature from a winged journey. Thanks for sharing!

We wake up in the morning wanting only to find love. We look out in the meadow and we see the morning dove. The answer came upon it's wings. Reminding us of God's sweet love each time we hear it sing.
