Notes About The Poem

Bride and Doom - Qarinage

I was elated at being your wife;
     we walked down the aisle
          both with a huge smile
we’d promised we’d be together for life.
     ‘Twas at her request
           your ex was our guest.
Her eyes pierced us like daggers - if looks could kill!
She beckoned you over, it made me feel ill ...

There would be hell to pay

It had twisted her mind your rejection.
     We got in the car
          it was not too far
and arrived at the wedding reception.
     She stood stony faced,
          said you’d got poor taste!
You said ’look we’re through. I’ve just married Hannah,
please don’t create trouble at Darkwood Manor’

There would be hell to pay

She sat seething at the wedding table
     then in a foul rage
          leapt onto the stage
I screamed ‘Darling, run if you are able’ ...
     I was so afraid
          She plunged in a blade
Bright scarlet blood began gushing from your heart
Our marriage vows said until death do us part
No one thought I’d be widowed right from the start

There would be hell to pay...
               Killed on your wedding day

To be honest Jan...this one truly sets you apart. You are a top talent here and this poem proves it. Greg loves the dark side and your winning placement is a testament to your talent. You should do serious writes more often, humour has it's place, but don't sell yourself short by fixating on them!

I loved the way you built up the suspense. I wanted it to go on and on and on and on and then well, he's dead, now, isn't he? Pretty funny stuff, and so well written, Jan. Nicely done!

My goodness Jan! you have a dark side. Yes,I understand it’s fiction (I think). Have you considered a job with Hammer Films, though I doubt they are still around. Seriously though (what else?) congratulations on an imaginative cleverly written piece.

Thanks Geoffrey I do worry about my muse lol - I wrote the first stanza and hit a brick wall as to how to continue, it took about 10 days to complete and it wasn't until i saw the Royal Wedding and Prince harry's ex was there that the ending came to me:-):-) hugs jan xx

OK, the title alone is priceless - the rest is captivating, like a gothic soap opera - guilty pleasure for me!

Great storytelling, Jan. I love how you work with the repeated line.

Thanks Agnes :-) Greg invented the form and as the poem evolved the repeated line changed from my original idea. I wrote the first stanza a few weeks ago and then hit a blank wall with the theme, it was only at the Royal Wedding where one of Prince Harry's ex's attended that I thought of the rest of the poem!:-) hugs jan xx

A tragic tale Jan, certainly not the happy ending like H And M. Well written and good luck. Tom. PS, love the title.
