Boxes
I used to fear I'd end up like them.
Twisted and bitter.
Venomous feuding,
Caused by unbending pride.
I feared I'd be forever trapped,
In the quiet suburb of their outdated ideals.
Shut off from reality, and all that is new.
How terrified I was,
That their genes coursed through me.
Shaping how I saw the world;
How I saw myself and my role in it.
In the beginning they were right to cast me.
To put me in that same ugly box they still share.
But over time I've come to realize,
I'm no longer that image they cling so desperately to.
My name,
No longer defines me.
