Op-Ed Contest

Sponsor: Suzette Richards

49 Words

Every year government allots humongous amount of money to schools for buying new books. Alas! bought, catalogued..library decorated with shiny books! End of the year, many of those books are not even touched! Keeps happening year after year! Are books being irrelevant in children's lives?!!!! What about tax-payers' money?

Congratulations on your win in my contest with this entry that asked some valid questions, Mala. Getting children to read (even adults) might seem like a daunting task, but parents need to set the example ... to me, that is the challenge.

Ah dear Mala, this is so true and so well written about; as someone that loves reading from a very young age and how i have always been surrounded by books, especially with bookstores and libraries being my fave places while growing up, i see the complete opposite nowadays, and some schools do not even pay much attention to libraries/maintenance anymore as tablets become common, i find that sad, think books should not be irrelevant but should rather be an important aspect of a child. Love this

Dear Ink, Your comment made me so happy! I was very much like you in my childhood - reading was my greatest passion from a young age, writing was the second. My oasis was the dark corner of a room, where nobody could find me; and I used to read anything and everything! I was teaching in Canada for last twenty-five years, and observed how the focus has shifted to use of technology! So delighted to see your thoughtful comment - really appreciate. Merry Christmas !

I do not know much about this form, but it seems like you have done a good version for it... I believe books are becoming irrelevant, especially as many now read online or use audio instead..

I have taught in Canadian schools for twenty-five years. This was my experience in last few years. According to myself, books shouldn’t be irrelevant! And as parents and educators, we need to teach children how to take good care of books, which are bought with the tax-payers’ money. Suzette asked for a paragraph in prose, not exceeding 50 words. Thank you for reading. Comments from fellow poets are very precious!
