Bobby's Girl sung by Susan Maughan

Golden age of Poetry Contest -Sponsored by: Oliver Mckeithan

Once in the days of long ago When us girls put our hearts on show There was a boy in our school class Who melt the heart of each young lass. One fine day, Bobby came along And us girls burst into fine song We sang the song out loud with nerve His face went red, we heard him curse. Bobby was a good looking guy No wonder he caught a girl's eye I often ponder how he is How he'd feel to be reading this. For the lad who rang a girl's bell I hope all is well, who can tell Maybe he'll get to read these words From a classmate's poetry verse.

School crushes. :) I often wonder where people are now. What paths their lives took from those long lost hot summers of childhood. That song (and your poem) are full of great innocence. Marcie Blane sung it originally but Susan Maughan took it into the UK charts. Susan was born in Durham and in her mid 80s today. Lovely write Beryl. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, thank you for that information and for reading commenting. Yes, those were the days of young love, youth and innocent, sadly I wasn’t allowed freedom to spread my wings and fly. I often wonder what happened to old friends and classmates too. I see my best friend from school occasionally, she doesn’t live far from me. Cheers to you too, Beryl

Great memories of the 60s Beryl, a lovely piece of writing with good rhyme and flow too. Remember hearing this fab song in the local wimpy singing along to it. Have a great weekend, great to meet fellow Brig as I'm North of the border, Gordon

Hi Gordon, fellow Brit, it was nice to look back on school day memories from the past. There are some special moments one never forgets and this was one of the best. I’m from the West Midlands, near to Walsall, though I grew up in Birmingham. Hubby and I have had a few holidays North of the border and we had some super times up there. Thank you, comments appreciated… Beryl

Dear Beryl, I love how this carries the warmth of nostalgia, the playful sting of young love, and the mystery of time’s passing. A sweet echo of days gone by, full of heart and wonder. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

Thank you dear Daniel, the song takes me back to that day when us girls were sat on the steps waiting for lessons to start. I can still see the look on Bobby’s face when we sang the song, what a laugh we had… Poet pal Beryl
