Blood Moon Eclipse
The Blood Moon Eclipse
is simply scientific;
the Moon moves into the shadow
of the Earth cast by the Sun,
a bit of sunlight still reaches the moon,
refracted by Earth's atmosphere
our eyes behold a blood moon.
Perhaps I prefer the ancient belief
that a Jaguar was attacking the Moon,*
bite by bite devouring the light,
releasing it's blood and then
turning to do the same to Earth,
causing the Ancients to gather
the tribe to shake spears
and make noise with dogs howling,**
chasing the Jaguar away.
...and of course they were right
because the Jaguar always fled
leaving the Moon and Earth unharmed.
*Incan mythology
**The Peruvian Hairless Dog is often perceived to be an Incan dog because it is known to have been kept during the Inca Empire (the Spaniards classified them as one of the six different breeds of dogs in the empire), they were also kept as pets in pre-Inca cultures from the Peruvian northern coastal zone.
