Bird Brain

They tied him snugly in a noose, and called him names to cook his goose - chicken-hearted, bird-brained, craven. He'd mistook a crow for a raven, which was a crime, although he knew a grackle from a crow.

Youve been writing on such clever themes lately dear david! Love this! How sad to be called names and to be regarded as one that isnt bright for such a small mistake. And i feel this on a very deep level but also smiled because i really cant tell the difference between a crow and a raven. Still learning! If you have any tips on how to distinguish let me know. If this is for a contest , best wishes! Sending you light always

oops, I forgot to say. It was actually my brother who once taught me that the easiest way to tell a crow from a raven is by their tails. I just looked it up. A raven has a tail like a diamond shape, and a crow has a tail like a flat edge fan.

Adding to my comment to CayCay, yes, when I was a kid, my brother with encyclopedic knowledge had a somewhat condescending way of correcting me, but this time it was my son, who has a nicer way. It had a beautiful blue/purple highlight glinting in the sun. Only you, with your poetic paintbrush, could bring that grackle justice.

Little poetic exercise to hone your skills and have fun at the same time? While 'although' and 'crow' aren't exact rhymes they work well for the ear, the silliness and wit are fun hits readers will enjoy and off-the-wall content is enough to make one forget, for a bit, the seriousness of adulthood. I know because when I read it, all that happened to me. Consider exercise a success ... CayCay

haha, I'm glad to provide a little levity. I was sitting by myself the other day, eating a burrito, and a grackle, actually perched on the top of the opposite chair. It was black with blue/purple highlights. I called it a crow and sent a photo to my bird-watching son, who identified it as a grackle. To me crow= blackish bird bigger than a sparrow.
