Big Pharma Dependency

mind numbing pain free
without meds where would we be
                    old school misery
               whiskey for an amputee
                 biting sticks in agony

Your poem seems right but to me, who is vexed of doctors and prescriptions, I would rather prefer prevention over cure!! But what you said about the instant relief we get from them is true. What about the long term effects!!! Good write about the immediate helpers though!!

I understand where your coming from Swetha, unfortunately acute agonising pain from unforeseen circumstances cannot be prevented, but I also do believe if a person is suffering from chronic pain, then medication should be given to them to help alleviate their suffering, all I can say about long term effects is most people just want the pain to stop, it’s a complex one for sure, cheers David

Nice Tanka, David. IMHO we need to mix traditional medicine with preventive medicine. Drugs and kemo are not always the only option. There much good to be said about quantum healing and holistic treatments of our bodies. A poet friend, Bill

Heya Bill, I do understand where your coming from, there is alternative medicine available for some chronic conditions, but it’s not the quick fix solution for acute conditions the majority of people need to continue working to a level expected in everyday tasks, in our ever demanding world , cheers David

If pain can be relieved Christopher, then it should be relieved, life certainly should be made more comfortable for the genuine sufferer, anything less would be a form of torture, cheers David

Great tanka. Prescription pain killers are excellent when used in the short term. Sadly the feeling of calm and euphoria can become addictive. A visit to the Old Operating Theatre museum in London opened my eyes as to what people went through. The surgeons back then were called Mister (and still are if male today) They were so called as they held no qualifications. Cheers - Gary

Thank you Gary I Never knew about the (Mister) title, butcher’s probably would be more suitable, I did hear Napoleon Bonapartes most eminent battlefield surgeon could do an amputation without nerve ligation in six seconds flat, doesn’t bear thinking about, I’ll take big pharma any day, cheers David

Hey, David. I'm always amazed when people condemn Big Pharma. I'm not willing to live without ANY medication that heals or eases pain. Let them have surgery without anesthesia, but I'll take Aleve for a migraine or use an asthma inhaler if I can't breathe.

Heya Jenna, I think it’s pretty evident from my tanka, my feelings on going back to the old ways of chewing on a stick, I do feel sorry for people who become reliant on medication, but sometimes it is actually abused, put it this way I’d far rather have it available than not, cheers David

Boy are you right! Big Pharma runs the world~manages the fate of humanity. It is time more people learn to "bite the bullet" or maybe before that is necessary, take some responsibility for their own health, and stop recklessly expecting their own actions to be fixed by a pill. :)Paulette

They do play a very important role Paulette, in our instantaneous want everything done yesterday world, but I wonder are people addicted to pain relief or pain medication, maybe that’s the problem the line is so thin is hard to know, but I do believe we sometimes need them as much as they need us, cheers David

A double edged sword Tom, love or hate big pharma, we are totally dependent on them and boy do they know it, cheers David
