Beyond the Breakers
In shallow waters, I look out to sea.
Small waves are lapping, giving me a sting
upon my legs with their frigidity.
My body, with my thoughts, is wandering
as I wade farther, ever farther out.
Beyond the breakers, I would love to go.
Could anybody even hear me shout
if I were caught inside an undertow?
A splash of violet on twilight’s sky
reminds me I must stay nearby the shore!
Deep feelings surge like waves. I want to cry.
How beautiful it is, yet I want more!
Vast ocean, like my dreams, is out of reach.
I turn away and wade back to my beach.
