Here lies the grave of innocence

Where despair tainted charity

Where hope broke in crumbled pretense

Betrayed by darkened clarity.

Ouch! There is nothing more tragic in this world than the loss of hope. Beautiful blending of images - "grave of innocence," "crumbled pretense." This is impactful in its masterfully written brevity. A fav for me and a master class in imagery! Congratulations on your win!

Great depth, Michelle. I detect maybe a theme in some of your serious writes (crumbled pretense)? Loved your opening line. Warmly ~ John

The betrayal of an innocent one is well depicted in your powerful poem, Michelle. The despair and break down of hope touch the reader's heart. Beautifully penned and surely a winner in the contest. Hugs, Carolyn
