Before Dementia's Final Assault

On his last day home, Dad went around talking to familiar household objects. Mom said he seemed to be telling his life goodbye, knowing he'd not return home. Written by Andrea Dietrich for Russell Sivey's Sedoka me any subject Poetry Contest

Congrats on your win Andrea, this touched my heart, also because my father suffers from an ailment for which there's no cure, but I find these old men so strong.. I'm learning from him. And this is one, I am going to remember for a long time, I know for sure. love always...

Looking thru the comments below this poem only confirms how much it touched others...It is true what you wrote-- that it is sad that the behavior of dementia patients can make us laugh...It's just human nature turning its tables...I hope writing this one was anecdotal for you. I love poems like this because of its healing touch. Gwendolen

Congrats to you for your win with this wonderful piece. I missed it before. It reminds me of my grandfather. He would be cute one minute and cursing at us the next. But even cursing, he was endearing. I loved him so much. I'm happy I read this tonight. Blessings, Rhonda

AHH, this is too cute! I know it is a sad, touchy subject, and I would NEVER disrespect,,,BUt you paint it sooo well. In this age, we all know WaYYY too many friends and family with Alzheimer's. Wait till we get old, all of us cell phone abusers, and breathing all this crap they spray across our sky (Chemtrails) Hey plz let me know about the form of my NUKE poem. YOU and I may be literally literacy opposites, BUT you seem to get me. I love that u didnt assume I am suicidal on my Voodoo piece:)

i agree, it was a cute thing he did, talking to the object. He did some really funny things. It is sad that a person , by losing his mind, is able to make us laugh. That is how strange life can be!

Yes, if anyone is wondering, this is a true story. My stepfather, Eldon Hulen, died a year after he was removed from the family home and put in a rest home where he died a slow and horrible death. I really hate this disease and pray a cure will be found.
