Before Another Day Is Gone

He was standing there with his cardboard prayer
saying help your fellow man,
and bless the soul of a willing bro’
that puts a dollar in my hand.
I passed him by saying why oh’ why
did it have to be that way,
that a fellow soul is taken down so low
and left begging for another day.

Chorus
Tell me tell me, me oh my, just where did we go wrong,
help us, help us get it right before another soul is gone.

A mother and her little baby
were standing in a check-out line,
the scarf she wore that covered up her face
said there's something's there to hide.
A person standing next to me
shouts America or go home,
I looked away and I closed my eyes
thinkin' where did we go wrong.

Chorus
Tell me tell me, me oh my, just where did I go wrong,
help me, help me see the light before another day is gone.

A young man walks the sidewalks
in the town where he was born,
but then one day he hears a call,
he must lay his freedom down,
but a choking fear made him break away
in a race he couldn’t win,
now one more mother’s son has paid
for the color of his skin.

Repeat Chorus 3X

Dear Mark, your lyric is soulful and thought provoking. The beauty of your empathy shines in tender expression both on the page and in your evocative and haunting song. Your voice is a savory blend of warmth and compassion. Congratulations for your excellent win in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes, my friend.. ~Susan

Mark, a poignant lyric that addresses several critical issues today that scream out for a resolution "before another day is gone." I strongly believe it will eventually happen in our lifetime. Congratulations on your win on Mile 10 of my 2022 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 11 has already started. Also, check out my blog post to view your current standing in the Marathon.

Hi Mark and congratulations on a great lyrical write for Mile 10. It's a trio of sorrowful scenarios, but they all need to be addressed. Your writing is unique because you delve deeply into places most don't like to enter. I admire that.

there are so many more stories in this tale that exist beneath the waves....great job in framing these, i was a volunteer at a soup kitchen and passed many on my way in, some self-inflicted, others unfortunate contretemps...we can only do what we can do...sad is the fact government will never solve the problem...nor will humanity, sometimes we can only feed them and return them to the streets....

Your words sadly ring true Mark. I wish I could have heard your recording but it just said ‘error’ and would not play. Everyone has a story to tell and so we must not judge by appearance. A moving song you have written. Blessings xxoo

Mark, I'm writing my comments while listening to your song for the second time. Your lyrics are earnestly truthful about three sad issues we face today, each one insightful about some of the flaws in our society. Your voice has a very mellow quality that I liked a lot... home studio or not, it's very well sung and written.
