Notes About The Poem

Tulip bulbs planted at Government House in memory of Dutch liberation - Canadian Tulip Festival

Beautiful Spring Flowers

in my city of Canada ...
the snowdrop flower ... welcomes Spring
      growing through the melting snow
the flower contour is a snowdrop
    even a single is impressive
snowdrops are a symbol used in poetry

~ soon garden nurseries are selling
pansies in a wild rainbow of saturations
that can survive our still cold nights ~

       and then come the petunias
that cheerful garden favorite for window boxes
in a multitude of hues and configurations
I love the type that grow like a wave
        for my hanging baskets ...

~ some of the names for petunia varieties
so poetically named are ... dream, magic
cascade, horizon, fantasy, and more ~

but, my absolute favorite Spring flower
    is the tulip ... a jewel-like beauty
that only blooms for 3 to 7 days
to create sweeping beds breathtaking ...
in every tint and intensity imaginable and guise
the spiritual meaning of a tulip is love, reflection,
                 forgiveness and 'new beginnings' ...

~ a bit of history- in 1945 Canada sheltered
the future Dutch Queen Julianna during WW2 Nazi
occupation and in thanks the Dutch sent
thousands of tulip bulbs ... and still do ~

a single perfection, a ruffled, a striped... each beautiful

Congrats on this winner. I enjoyed the information presented as well. It is wonderful that your country saved the life of the Queen of Holland and that the country honors your country by sending the bulbs. I do like tulips but I have lost all of mine. I need to get some more but Alas! I am really not able to do that work anymore. Sara

Snowdrops hail Spring where I live in the UK. I love to see them. I never knew that about tulips either. You've adopted an interesting style for this free verse Constance - weaving history, description with a narrative. You've intrigued me and set me up well for this weeks episode of Gardeners' World that's just about to begin on BBC. Congratulations on your win. Cheers - Gary

Gary, thank you for the congratulations and the compliment on my poem and style, and the great comment, my mother was a avid gardener and taught me quite a bit about flowers through helping her, we just finished the 2 week Tulip Festival here in my city in Canada, peace _Constance

Anne-Lise, thank you for the compliment and comment, and encouragement. Tulips are often used in funeral arrangements I have noticed. Happy you were able to get some for your fathers funeral, my father loved the yellow ones, I was not able to get them in the month of July so, I used beautiful yellow roses instead and told everyone to send yellow flowers, love _Constance

I do love my tulips. They start coming up even before the snows gone. That is one hearty plant. Well penned. Have a great day.

I like the presentation...I guess it's more the style...it has two voices...Like a storyteller would tell it...I also got a view of the snowdrops...

Arturo, thank you for the compliment, I am a storyteller and I reflect that in my poetry, the Ojibwe, my ancestors are known to be storytellers, my grandma was and it was the gift she left me, she never wrote a single story down, but could tell them word for word over the years, not me I have to write them down, peace _Constance
