Backyard Skeleton

Late autumn’s wind
screeches like a banshee
and the sky is an angry ashen gray.
Our old tree -
stooped over and skeletal -
seems to convulse violently
as if in shocking fright
as its leafless limbs
eerily scrape the side
 of our house
nearest to our bedroom,
tap – tap- tapping fiercely
against our window pane.

The wind recedes
and snow begins to drift down
from pewter-painted clouds.
The skeleton in our backyard
turns slowly through the night
into a grim reaper
wearing a robe of white.

The skeleton of the tree at the backyard close to the house turning into a grim reaper... It is so possible and striking. Congratulations on your podium win 👏

This is a wonderfully eerie and atmospheric free verse! The transition from the screeching autumn wind to the silent, snowy arrival of winter is beautifully captured. I love how the pacing of the poem reflects the narrative—the longer, frantic first stanza perfectly mirrors the violent scraping of the branches, while the shorter second stanza brings a quiet, chilling stillness. The final image of the tree transforming from a shivering skeleton into a white-robed grim reaper is absolutely brilliant and sets a fantastic spooky mood. Great work! Congratulations on your win.👏

I had to check the calendar after I read this lol. I love how this entertains and funnels down to the transformation at the end. Well done!

Somewhat eerie and dark, but can't those tree limbs and wind sometimes be scary. We had a huge oak in our yard up close to the house and it had gotten so big and spread over part of the house during fall it would drop so many acorns that they would awake me at night. Thank you for sharing this one with us.Sara K.

Omg Andrea.. this gave me chillsss and m not even kidding! how haunting, eerie and atmospheric this is.. like the skeleton of a secret buried deep in proximity of the soul.. turning through each moment.. this makes me restless somehow and I'm not at ease lol, but that is what reflects the insanely brilliant quality of poetry isn't it? Your lines here are nothing less than genius to be honest, "Late autumn’s wind screeches like a banshee and the sky is an angry ashen gray" what even? Wowzzers and that part ~ "leafless limbs ...nearest to our bedroom" oh gawsh .. spooky. And the ending with ~ "The skeleton in our backyard turns slowly through the night into a grim reaper wearing a robe of white" Absolutely phenomenal, truly a fav from you.. ✨🌙🕊️🌹🌸🌙✨ (we now have emojisss!!)
